If Amritsar is the emotional centre of Sikhism, Anandpur Sahib is its historical one.
In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh — the tenth Sikh Guru — formally established the Khalsa here, transforming the shape of Sikh identity forever. Today the town remains a major pilgrimage centre and the anchor of a wider Sikh heritage trail across Punjab.
Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib
At the heart of Anandpur Sahib stands Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, one of the five Takhts (seats of temporal authority) of Sikhism. It marks the spot where the Khalsa was born.
Weapons associated with the Guru are on display for pilgrims. As at any gurdwara, cover your head, remove shoes and dress modestly.
Virasat-e-Khalsa — A Museum That Feels Like Cinema
On a ridge across the town rises Virasat-e-Khalsa, a striking Moshe Safdie-designed museum whose stainless-steel petals mirror the folds of the surrounding hills.
Inside, immersive galleries take you through Punjab's culture, the lives of the Sikh Gurus, the founding of the Khalsa, the Sikh Empire and modern history. Allow at least two hours.
Entry is free. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Hola Mohalla — Punjab's Warrior Festival
The day after Holi, Anandpur Sahib hosts Hola Mohalla — a three-day gathering established by Guru Gobind Singh as a display of Sikh martial arts.
Nihangs in blue turbans and yellow robes ride bareback, perform gatka (traditional weapons demonstrations) and take part in mock battles.
It is one of the most spectacular experiences in the entire Sikh calendar. Book accommodation months in advance.
Extending the Trail
Fatehgarh Sahib — a solemn gurdwara complex honouring the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, martyred in 1704 by the Mughal governor of Sirhind.
Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo — where Guru Gobind Singh completed the final recension of the Guru Granth Sahib.
Chamkaur Sahib — battle memorials on the road between Anandpur Sahib and Sirhind.
Together these sites form a deeply moving Sikh heritage circuit that can be driven in three to four days from Chandigarh or Amritsar.

Anandpur Sahib is about 90 minutes from Chandigarh and 4 hours from Amritsar by road.
The nearest railway station is Anandpur Sahib itself; the nearest airport is Chandigarh.
Best months are October to March; Hola Mohalla in March is the peak experience but also the busiest.
