In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi has developed into a dramatic public tradition in which teams (called Govindas) form human pyramids attempting to reach and break suspended pots of curd — recreating young Krishna's playful theft of butter.
Mumbai's Dahi Handi is spectacular and competitive, with major sponsorships and international media coverage.
Mathura and Vrindavan
Mathura — traditionally the birthplace of Krishna — hosts week-long celebrations. Temples are decorated. Devotional singing continues late into the night.
At midnight (the traditional birth hour of Krishna), devotees gather for the Janmashtami Puja with prayers, aarti and the ceremonial rocking of Krishna's cradle.
