Maha Shivratri is devoted to Lord Shiva. Temples may remain active throughout the night as devotees pray, chant, fast and make offerings.
The festival has particular significance in places strongly associated with Shiva, including Varanasi.
A Night of Devotion
Rather than being primarily a public carnival, Maha Shivratri is a deeply devotional experience. Devotees observe fasts, offer bilva leaves, milk and water to Shiva lingams, and chant "Om Namah Shivaya" through the night.
It provides visitors an opportunity to see how prayer, pilgrimage and sacred geography remain integrated into everyday Indian life.
