The Vishukkani
The Vishukkani may include rice, fruits, vegetables, flowers — especially golden kani konna blossoms — coins, sacred objects and a lamp.
Family members traditionally view the Vishukkani early in the morning as the first sight of the new year.
The idea is beautifully simple: begin the new period by first seeing symbols of abundance, light and prosperity.
Vishu Sadya and Traditions
A traditional Vishu Sadya is served on a banana leaf, similar to Onam Sadya but with regional Vishu specialties.
Elders give Vishukkaineettam — small gifts of money to younger family members.
Firecrackers, new clothes and family visits complete the day.
