Amritsar is the spiritual heart of Punjab. Patiala is its royal one.
Once the seat of one of undivided India's most influential princely states, Patiala today is a working Punjabi city that quietly guards forts, palaces, mirror-hall interiors and a set of cultural exports — the Patiala peg, the Patiala salwar, the Patiala shahi turban — that travelled far beyond its walls.
Qila Mubarak — The Auspicious Fort
The Qila Mubarak ("auspicious fort") complex was founded in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh, the founder of the Patiala royal line. Behind its outer walls sit palaces, courtyards, private gardens and ceremonial halls.
The heart of the complex is the Qila Androon (inner fort), whose apartments include lavish frescoes and mirror-work. Recent restoration has opened parts of the complex to visitors.
The fort now shares its precinct with the busy old bazaars of Patiala — walk out through the gate and you land in a market that has been operating for centuries.
Sheesh Mahal & the Old Moti Bagh Palace
The Sheesh Mahal ("palace of mirrors") inside the Old Moti Bagh complex was commissioned by Maharaja Narinder Singh in the mid-19th century.
Fresco panels, mirror inlay and Rajput–Mughal painting traditions cover the halls. The complex today also hosts the Art Gallery of Patiala with a strong collection of medals, weapons and paintings.
Behind it stretches the Lachhman Jhula — a picturesque suspended footbridge across an ornamental lake.
Things That Bear Patiala's Name
Patiala peg — a generous shot of whisky (allegedly named for the maharaja's cricket-fuelled hospitality). Do not attempt more than two.
Patiala salwar — the wide-pleated trouser silhouette worn under a short kameez. A fashion export from the royal court that never left the shelves.
Patiala shahi turban — a distinctive royal turban style still worn ceremonially and at weddings.
Patiala gharana — a major khayal-classical music lineage founded by Ustad Ali Bakhsh and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan in the 19th century.

Getting There
Patiala is about 60 km / 90 minutes from Chandigarh by road and around 2.5 hours from Ludhiana.
The nearest major airport is Chandigarh (IXC).
Rail links are excellent. Combine Patiala with a Sikh-heritage circuit through Fatehgarh Sahib and Anandpur Sahib.
